Three Natural Supplements To Take If You're Concerned About Your Eye Health

Blog

If you're concerned about your eye health, then you should look into taking a variety of eye care supplements. There are quite a few herbs, vitamins, and other natural supplements that can help protect your eye from vision loss. While many people are familiar with vitamin A (think of the old expression about eating your carrots) there are lots of other things you can pick up. Here is a list of three ones you should consider.

Bilberry

This berry is not something you are likely to find in your supermarket. While it is visually similar to a blueberry, it has become a very popular ingredient in eye supplements. The berries became really popular among health enthusiasts after a popular story got passed around concerning pilots in the British Air Force. The story goes that the pilots had dramatically improved night vision after eating lots of bilberry jam. Subsequent studies have found that there is a powerful chemical in bilberry (called Anthocyanosides) which can help protect a part of the eye called the retina.

Bilberry supplements can come in a powder extract (sold in a capsule) or as part of a combination eye care supplement (which might be a tablet or capsule).

Lutein

Lutein is a a type of carotenoid. It's found in leafy green vegetables, and in smaller amounts in egg yolks and carrots. It's also one of the main components of the human eye (particularly in the macula). This is one reason health aficionados will tell you to juice kale and spinach to help your eyes. However, if you're not in the mood to drink a big glass of kale juice everyday, then a great alternative is to take a lutein supplement. It's even been shown to help decrease the risk of developing macular degeneration.

Some eye care supplements will even combine lutein and the aforementioned bilberry into one convenient to take pill. This is great if you are not a big fan of taking multiple pills.

Fish Oil  (or Algae Oil)

Another important supplement to take for your eye health is fish oil (or algae, if you are a vegetarian). The reason that you need to supplement with this oil is that you need DHA. Regular Omega Fatty Acid supplements like flax seed or Evening Primrose oil contain ALA, but not DHA. This particular essential fatty acid has tons of health benefits, including memory and mood, but it's also vital for your eyes. So, if you are not someone who eats lots of fresh salmon, tuna, or other fish, then it is very important to supplement and get the DHA into your diet.

Finding Better Glasses

After I realized that I was going to be traveling a lot for work, I realized that I didn't want to wear my contact lenses 24/7. Instead of suffering with dry, itchy, irritated eyes, I decided that it might be best to work with an eye doctor who could help me to find a pair of frames that would look great on my face. I wanted to find glasses that were just as attractive as I was, so I started looking around. I visited a great optometry office, and the doctor helped to guide me towards glasses that were perfect for my face shape. This blog is all about finding a better pair of glasses.
